IL MUMA NELLA MAPPA DI ASSISI

IL MUMA NELLA MAPPA DI ASSISI

Muma

The first interactive Missionary Museum

Although MUMA was founded in 2011, a museum about Capuchin missionaries has existed in Assisi since 1973. Father Luciano Matarazzi, the creative spirit behind it, was a friar of many talents: a painter, photographer, and portrait artist.

His passion for the Amazon and everything it offered led him to found the Museum of Amazonian Indians. The objects it housed (mounted animals, butterflies, musical instruments, masks, and sundry handicrafts) had been brought back by missionaries who traveled back and forth between the Alto Solimões region in Brazil and Assisi, Italy. In order to commemorate the Capuchin missionaries’ 100 years of presence in the Western Amazon, Umbria’s Seraphic Province has chosen to pay tribute to that invaluable mission by refurbishing the pre-existing Ethnographic Museum, thereby turning it into Europe’s first interactive multimedia missionary museum, thanks to the implementation of the following state-of-the-art technological improvements: four floors of installations, dynamic maps, screenings, virtual characters, and two life-size dioramas (1:1 scale).

Visitors to MUMA will follow a path through cultural and sensorial exhibits, on a journey through the Amazon that promises to engage all five senses as it transports guests over 6000 miles away to a world made of forests, rivers, animals, and indigenous civilizations. The Amazonian sounds, objects, testimonials, and landscapes to be discovered here could not be any more authentic. As the captions blossom into stories before their eyes, visitors will be transported on an unforgettable journey.
